What I love about Destroy Boys’ latest album Open Mouth, Open Heart

Destroy Boys, for the people that have not had the opportunity to have their ears blessed by their music, is one of the greatest up and coming punk rock bands out of the Bay Area. “Open Mouth, Open Heart” is Destroy Boys latest album which was released in 2021. Let me tell you, “Open Mouth, Open Heart” has been on my heavy rotation playlist since it was released.

Alexia’s Signature scream (AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!)

Alexia has what I like to call her “signature scream”. Alexia’s scream is featured on tracks like “Te Llevo Conmigo”, which is the first Bilingual track in the Destroy Boys catalog, or on the track “For What”, which is the most vehement song of the entire album. The most iconic use of Alexia’s soul piercing scream is on the 2020 single “Fences”. Alexia uses her screams in the single “Fences” as a very persuasive tool to portray the mental hardships of having to live through a toxic and abusive relationship. When I hear Alexia scream so passionately, I know she shares the pain that many of us go through.

Two Tracks in Spanish!!!

“Open Mouth, Open Heart” features something we haven’t seen  in all of the Destroy Boys catalog, two tracks that are in Spanish! These two tracks are especially awesome to me because I read, write, and speak in Spanish.

The two tracks I am extolling about are, “Lo Peor” as well as “Te Llevo Conmigo”. I love “Lo Peor” mainly because of the two minutes of sweet and soft acoustic guitar that is paired with a melody to match. Another thing I love is that the lyrics of “Lo Peor” are simple enough, even for non-Spanish speakers to sing along to. This song is a 10/10 WOULD LISTEN AGAIN.

Now the ear sizzling, head banging, and stress relieving “Te Llevo Conmigo” comes with a sound that will knock you off your seat. The drumming in this track perfectly lays the red carpet for Alexia’s vocals. When the drums slow down, Alexia’s voice follows and when the drums get quick and aggressive she comes in with the hardcore vocals; everything we love from Destroy Boys, but in spanish.

Music Video for Drink

The music video for “Drink” is one of the things I love most about “Open Mouth, Open Heart.  It  starts off tame and unassuming, but quickly evolves into a chaotic wonderland. One thing I like about the video is the variety of characters. Every character is so different from one another, yet everyone still seems to be having a good time, it reminds me of the acceptance culture we so strongly advocate for in the queer community.

There are so many great things about Destroy Boys’ “Open Mouth. Open Heart”. It’s hard to not fall in love with Alexia’s scream; the two spanish tracks; or the subtle, meaningful, and societal healing messages, within the music videos. Everyone needs to get their headphones, download “Open Mouth. Open Heart”, listen to all 13 songs, and feed their souls with this awesome work of art.
