“Why Are We Like This?…” A review of RecOi!l’s latest EP.

RecOi!l is a pretty legit name for a punk rock band, referencing both the art of pogo dancing and having oi! in their name, perfectly summarizing the band’s style. On the cover of their newest EP, “Why Are We Like This?…”, from left to right, you see Eric, the band’s drummer, shotgunning a beer, Ziggy, their bassist, ollieing over a shopping cart, guitar player and backup vocalist Tania pouring Mickey’s out of a 40 oz into a teacup, and a mugshot of vocalist “Toothpick”. Backed by a blue cheetah print, you instantaneously gain a sense of what you’re in for.

The 4 track, 6 minute EP released on March 14th, 2020 makes you want to do two things, go out and skate or chug a beer, not that the two are mutually exclusive. Starting off with “On The Attack”, the lyrics describe what it’s like to deal with an anxiety attack; with punchy riffs, a solid bass line, and scratchy vocals that make you seriously want to pogo. The next track, “Skate Song” has that classic street punk sound reminiscent of skate videos from the ’90s. This is a song I would definitely jam out to while playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater or Underground. Track three, “Changy Leg”, has that Louie Louie feel, starting off with a very rumble-y bass line and kick drum and hopping into an excellent three-chord riff. My personal favorite song of this EP, the fourth and final track, “Hangover”, is just such a pogo worthy song about drinking away a hangover, and always gets me in a good mood when it comes on. This is probably going to be my drinking song for the next month or so, especially in these times,
