There is something remarkably nostalgic about summertime… The rising temperatures uncover a long-gone sense of simpler times.
Many of us have never lived in a world like the one we’re currently dwelling in — pandemics, racial turmoil, financial hardships… you name it. However, amidst all the uncertainty in our life, and although in many cases it’s easier said than done, we need to hold on to every ounce of happiness we can get. Embodied in the release of their newest music video, Casual Vice gifted me that ounce of genuine satisfaction I had longed for this week.
Casual Vice, is the joint musical efforts of two So Cal legends, Kyle Krone and Brandon Hoogenboom. The video was shot and directed by Jack Revell, “I really dig Jack’s work so we gave him creative freedom to film whatever…” Hoogenboom continues, “We just said, ‘Drive up the coast and get some ocean shots and some people jumping in the ocean…’” The video depicts the luxury of exploring and embracing the treasures that summer has to offer. While the chorus simultaneously sings, “Whenever darkness comes and takes ahold / I’ll turn the silver linings into gold…” cementing the notion of hope and its importance in an otherwise negative situation. The changes one is forced to encounter during the transition of youth to adulthood (especially in 2020) can be very difficult and at times finding the silver lining can almost seem impossible.
Earlier this year, Causal Vice released their first single, ‘Brighter Days’. Released a few months after COVID-19 hit, the song then was a true breath of fresh air and still holds the same grip. Again, Casual Vice has time and again brought a lightness in to my life… a lightness and sense of reassurance. Although we’re experiencing cruel times there are individuals creating and honing in their artwork. After all, it’s in these times when creatives are vital in keeping us sane, right?
Whether done intentionally or not, “Something In The Water” is more than a tune to throw on, but rather, an anthem— a reminder that although times are tough, finding the silver lining is key to keeping life’s motion moving forward, always, and the music video serves as the visual extension of that message.
