Post Show Thoughts: Michael Seyer at The Lodge Room

A new wave of sensual and intimate bedroom pop has been on the rise within indie music for years now, and Michael Seyer is one of the great innovators of the genre. Seyer recently performed at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles after a long tour with the indie hit band Men I Trust.

I entered the Lodge Room to an open and charismatic crowd socializing and rustling about. The atmosphere of chill vibes was set in by the opening act, Pink Siifu, a local rapper in the LA scene. Siifu brought the crowd into a warm and comfortable environment with his clever rhymes and alliteration. The Lodge Room’s unique lighting and stage added much to the performance. It seemed that Siifu set just the right tone to introduce an incredible second act.

As the band begins to set up their equipment, Seyer and a few of his friends rolled a huge TV onto the stage. Excited by this intriguing setup people crowded around the stage to witness the unfolding of a game of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Seyer took his seat and picked his preferred character, Cloud, while his opponent chose the cute green dinosaur, Yoshi. The match started and the crowd went wild. A hard and well-fought match was played, but Seyer took the last stock and won the game. Overjoyed by his win and the crowd’s reaction, Seyer invited fellow fans to come on stage and try their best against him and his buddies.

Although a few friends of Seyer’s and local fans continued to play, Seyer did not hesitate to begin his set. The lights dimmed and fans began to push and shove in order to find the best place to watch. Seyer’s serene voice created an unforgettable atmosphere that seduced his fans into his musical prowess. The saxophone and keyboard especially underlined the jazzy undertones to create a sweet and smooth sound. Meanwhile, the lead guitarist swayed the crowd with his bluesy and satisfying guitar compositions. Their set consisted of many fan favorites like “Weekend at Santa Cruz”, “Pretty Girls”, “Bad Bonez”, and my personal favorite, “Lucky Love”. As to my surprise, Pink Siifu and Seyer himself performed a magical song together titled, “Mocha and Chocolate”. Seyer concluded the performance with an introduction of each band member and their own personal solo. The crowd cheered for each and every one of the performers.

Overall, Pink Siifu and Michael Seyer put on a show I don’t think anyone could forget. Each performer was excellent within their own right, and I will be back to see him again. Thanks to UCLA Radio and The Lodge Room, we can expect high quality shows from local music like this one.
