As consumers, we choose who we give our money to, and while your $20 may mean nothing to a million-dollar company, it can mean the world to a small business, especially during these times. It is important that we uplift the black community by actively supporting Black-owned businesses in our everyday life. Buying from Black-owned businesses is a great way to show some love and help someone continue to pursue their dreams.
Here’s a list of 6 black owned businesses you should know about
1. Artists Untold
Artists Untold is an e-commerce shop that provides up-and-coming Black & underrepresented artists with a platform to sell their work. Their clothing consists of streetwear featuring numerous artworks and a direct portion of each sale goes to the artist behind the design. This company also makes sustainability efforts by helping reduce their carbon footprint and donating one tree for each sold item and five trees for every recycled product that is purchased. I think this is a beautiful initiative and a great company to be supporting.
2. Beyu
Another great Black-owned business to support is Beyu which is a handmade clothing brand based out of Texas. This slow fashion brand was founded in 2016 by business owner Bobbie who started this journey as a hobby and with a passion for sewing. Bobbie creates effortlessly chic designs with eco-friendly fabrics in an effort to create environmentally conscious clothing. Sustainability has never looked sooo good!
3. Rate
Rate is another unique and eco-friendly Black-owned brand you should get to know. Rate stands for ‘ Rough Around The Edges’ which coincides perfectly with this brand’s vision of up-cycled denim fashion. Fefe Brown is the creative genius behind these innovative and reminiscent up-cycled designs. Her brand is a modernized blend of the 90’s and early 2000’s period which leaves one feeling nostalgic yet amazed at the up-cycled beauty that she creates. I definitely recommend following their Instagram to stay updated on any new releases!
4. Pink Plastic
I recently came across Pink Plastic and was pleasantly surprised by their unique selection of designs and inclusive sizing. Pink Plastic is an avant-garde 20th century inspired brand that was launched by Aurum Amare in 2017. This brand is a modernized fusion of styles and is perfect for those that love experimenting with fashion. Their bright colors, bold patterns, and unique designs will have you asking for more.
5. Indego Africa
Indego Africa is an ethical and sustainable non-profit that partners with female artisans from Rwanda to produce beautiful handwoven designs while providing these artisans with a global platform for their items. 100% of the profit made goes to creating more opportunities for their artisans by investing in their education and paying them fair wages. Indego Africa sells a variety of handwoven items like hats, bags, baskets as well as home décor and art. These women create some of the most beautiful and unique handwoven designs I’ve ever seen and I definitely recommend you check them out.
6. Sorella
If you live near LA, you might be familiar with Sorella or you might have come across their famous pink “Girls Tour” wall on your feed. Sorella is located in the heart of Melrose and is a go-to spot for fashion and photo ops. This Black-owned business launched in 2012 and has expanded exponentially over time. Sorella sells trendy and affordable womenswear and menswear. Their styles range from streetwear, casual wear to glamour and vintage.
