The Californian musicians have given us previews for what’s to come in their forthcoming LP
Four years after their last album You’re Welcome was released, Wavves have announced that they are finished with their seventh album, HIDEAWAY. The album is set to be released on July 16th on Fat Possum Records, the label that dropped Wavves breakthrough album Wavves, which was released in 2008).
A music video was filmed for the song “Sinking Feeling”. The video is a mashup tribute to two iconic movies: The Matrix and Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas.
The band steps away from their usual loud and abrasive style and step into an indie surf tone. Most Wavves songs are written by Nathan Williams, the man who created Wavves as a recording project before adding other members and becoming a full-scale band. This song in particular was written by the band’s guitar player, Alex Gates. He released the song on his bandcamp as a demo in 2014. His unpolished version features more synths, an eerie modulated voice, drum machine beats, and a bedroom recording sound.
The other single from the album, “Help Is On The Way” is another track that shows that Wavves is set on switching up their approach for this album. The song is a noticeably more pop friendly sound than their earlier work. Although Wavves isn’t as aggressive as usual, the track contains a lot of energy and the chorus is an absolute anthem. The lyrics describe the battles of fighting addiction and trying to stay sober, an issue Williams has been very open about in the past.
I’m making changes See there’s nothing to it Except the shit you bring Keep on fighting with the devil never changes
