REVIEW: The Witcher

My friend always used to tell me how much she LOVED The Witcher games and how excited she was when Netflix announced that they were making a live-action. She tried to convince me to play the game multiple times, but I never got invested in it. I remember playing it for 5 minutes until I got distracted with other things. Don’t get me wrong, I do believe that this is a great game — I’m just not a gaming person myself. I also knew that the game was based on a series of books, but that was pretty much all my knowledge about these stories. Even when the show came out, I just totally ignored it since I wasn’t a fan. But I started to see a lot of memes and comments on social media related to the show. I then decided to watch the trailer, and that was enough to make myself think “What the heck, let’s just give it a try!”

So here it is, an honest but probably not accurate (don’t take this too seriously) review from someone that never played the game or read the books.

The first episode starts introducing the character Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavil) who is fighting an enormous monster on a lake in a dark forest. At this first scene, we learn what this character is capable of and that his not human (which it is very important information for the rest of the show). His journey continues as he goes to a village with the dead monster on the top of his horse, and he stops at a pub. For some reason, people don’t seem to like his kind which was not explained at all… ok…The story continues as he meets with the wizard from the village. The wizard wants to hire him to kill someone that is hunting him. A separate storyline starts and we follow this princess from a kingdom that about to be attacked. At the end of the first episode, we learn that the stories are connected and that destiny is acting on their paths.

The storyline is very confusing and the episodes are not in chronological order. It is very hard to keep track of when things are happening, but it is very interesting to see a different format from what we’re all used to. The show doesn’t quite make sense when you finish the episode. I honestly still had to google it, so I could understand some of the details.

I feel this show is focused on people that are familiar with the books and game but it is still a very entertaining show for casual watchers like me. In my opinion, this show is worth watching because of the incredible visuals effects, action scenes, and Gerald’s voice. 😛
